Topic Brainstorm
For this topic brainstorm, I began by browsing through the project topic listings. I looked at all of those that stuck out to me. After reading into each of the ones that stood out, I then narrowed it down to four to focus on. I have included links for each one of the topics. The page that I am linking for each of them is the page which I found the most useful in helping me decide that I ultimately wanted to include that topic in this post. The first topic that initially stuck out to me was The Loving Couples of the Ramayana. This page helped because I saw immediately that I would have so much material to go off of if I were to choose this topic. I liked that it included but was not limited to the story of Rama and Sita. I have never written romance in any way at all, so I think it would be a new and exciting way to stimulate some creativity that I have never had to use before. I think it would be really fun to put a modern twist on some of these ancient couples; it even crossed my mind to do romance/comedy style of stories. I have practically no knowledge of these couples to go off of. That's why I think it could be pretty fun to put a modern twist on any one of the ancient couples from the Ramayana.
The next topic I picked was Epic Heroes. I think it stuck out to me because I am a Marvel fan; the idea of heroes has always been fascinating to me. It's cool to see that stories of heroes have been around for so long, and continue to remain extremely popular. The page that initially got me more interested in this topic as I began to research further was the heroic story of the Pandavas. I know I could write about heroic brothers, and it's nice knowing that there is a lot more material out there that I may find even more enthralling. I would definitely want to put a modern twist on a hero story of a set of brothers. I could see them being something like the Avengers...this topic is probably my favorite at the moment! I don't have any knowledge on popular Epic heroes but I would love to know more.
I was also very interested to read about the Supernatural Characters of the Ramayana. I originally liked the topic of the Rakshasas. This stood out to me after reading the Indian story "Goblin City." I enjoyed that tale so much I based my first story off of it. The topic seemed a lot more abstract than some of the other ones which was initially very appealing. I liked that there was a demon-like antagonist that had supernatural abilities. I thought that you could be very creative if you used fantasy characters such as these. I didn't choose just the Rakshasas for this brainstorm because I wanted to learn about even more supernatural characters. I think it would be cool to include them in my stories if I were to choose a topic like this, but I didn't want to necessarily limit myself just to the Rakshasas. It's apparent that I have so much more information on this topic to delve into, and it's very exciting. I think it would be cool to create a story with antagonists like Rakshasas or other supernatural characters, but also have a protagonist hero. I am not sure if that mash-up is possible, but I would love to try it. The only knowledge I know about these supernatural characters is what was said of the Rakshasas in the story "Goblin City."
Finally, the last topic that sounded super appealing to me was Epic Battles. This initially stuck out because it simply sounds awesome. I grew up watching Lord of the Rings, and scenes like that came to mind when I was reading through this topic. I was also interested in reading about the warrior caste that would participate in epic battles. I think it would be fun to create a fantasy scene and have armies on both sides fighting over something like the fate of the world. Admittedly, I don't know very much about traditional Indian epic battles at the moment. But this is why I am looking forward to getting into the reading material for the class such as the Ramayana. This topic, like the others I have picked, clearly has a lot of source material to work with and that is exciting to me. I think it would be cool to twist around the characters/species that were battling, or even the objective of certain battles. It would be cool to create battles where there is not necessarily a good or bad guy; both sides are fighting for their own reasons. I do not have any prior knowledge on classic epic battles.
