Introduction to myself

Hello! My name is Christian.  My major is biology and I transferred into OU from a small school in Memphis.  Originally my major was Civil Engineering, but it took me about a month to realize I really didn't enjoy those classes and I did not want to think about concrete the rest of my life.  I picked biology for the simple reason that it was the subject that interested me the most; I really had no idea what I would want to do with a degree in biology.  It's still been hard for me to truly decide what I'd like to do after college, seeing as I always knew I wouldn't want to do medical school or some other long, arduous program.  Just recently I have become more fascinated with the growing field of biotechnology.  I'm looking to move in that direction after I graduate.
Growing up, I loved sports.  I was on competitive teams for basketball and baseball.  It wasn't uncommon for my teams to travel across Oklahoma and sometimes into adjacent states.  As I grew up, I started to get more into tennis.  This was the sport I took the most serious once I was in high school.  Though I always thought it would be really cool, I never definitely wanted to dedicate my time to becoming a college athlete.  I continue to occasionally play basketball and tennis, just much more casually.  Nowadays, my favorite sport to play would probably be table tennis (if you count that as a sport).
One of my favorite things to do ever is travel.  I have been blessed to travel to quite a few places in my life.  This is because my grandfather, who used to go all around the world when he was a young lad in the navy, loves to travel.  I have been lucky enough to be his travel companion on quite a few trips by now.  My grandpa's favorite form of travel is a cruise, as you don't have to move your luggage from stop to stop; it is essentially a traveling hotel.  There was one time however we traveled through England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland on a bus (we did have to take a ferry at one point to cross a strait).  I don't think my grandpa liked being on a bus as much, as we never did something like that again.  My favorite place I have been is definitely Australia.  I would love to go back to Sydney and Cairns someday.  I definitely think I took a lot of the traveling for granted as I was fairly young.  I know I would appreciate it much more now.  Two summers ago, my family went to Alaska to see the house where my dad and grandpa used to live when my grandpa was stationed there in the navy.  This was a really cool and special experience.  The wilderness and mountains in Alaska are breathtaking.  I now can see why Alaska is commonly called the Last Frontier.
I really love animals, especially dogs.  I have one dog (it's really a family dog but I consider her mine/ours) named Maisie.  Maisie is an Australian Shepherd.  She is very energetic and playful.  We got her as a puppy and she was a handful for awhile, though she has now settled down quite a bit.  My dad has taken it upon himself to train Maisie, as he sees she is very intelligent and thinks it would be unfair to let that potential to go to waste.  She really has turned into quite the dog the last couple of months.  I will be sure to update my blog with any relevant news on Maisie. :)
This has been an introduction to Christian!  I hope you have enjoyed reading it; I have enjoyed getting to open up on this blog.  Here is to an awesome semester, friends!

A picture of Maisie when she was a young pup, taken by my mother Vicki Trent :).

  1. Hi Christian! It's awesome you've been able to travel the world so much already and being able to travel so much with one person must be really special. Your pup Maisie is absolutely precious! I love Australian Shepherds, they're so intelligent, energetic, and they have beautiful puppy eyes. I've also said whenever I graduate college I want to get myself an Australian Shepherd.

  2. Your dog has the most beautiful eyes! But I'm sure she gets that all the time. I know Australian Shepards are known for being clever– I'm sure Maisie has already learned tons of tricks. Your trip to Alaska sounded like a lot of fun. I visited there the summer after my senior year of high school. Mt. Denali is spectacular. I've never been on a cruise before, but you've really made me want to try one out!

  3. Howdy, Christian! First off, your dog is ADORABLE! I am also a biology major here at OU and I love it! I have always wanted to travel everywhere in the world, but I have not traveled too much and have only been out of state a few times. I think it's awesome that you played two sports in school! I only played tennis and quite after my first year of high school because I wasn't too good, haha.

  4. Hey Christian! Your comment about not wanting to think about concrete for the rest of your life made me laugh. I've had a lot of realizations like that that have made me switch my major and career path. It sounds like you'll do great things with whatever you choose to do, though! Also, your dog is adorable! Good luck with the semester!

  5. Hi Christian! I also played tennis in high school however, I was not very good mainly because I have no competitive bone in my body but I still continue to play it for fun. Your grandpa sounds like a very fun person and as someone who always dreams of traveling I envy (in a good way) that you have gone to so many destinations. Greatest luck with your knew dog puppies can be a handful at first, I’m looking forward to reading more updates!

  6. Christian! One of the first thing I noticed about your post was how you are a biology major but is very reluctant on going to medical school. I totally get it, I gave that thought plenty of time before making the decision to go forth with it. I'm also very interested in your interest of biotechnology as that is something that I also considered going to when I first went to college, but in all truth, I don't think the inclusion of such math was never for me, but I'm glad it is for you! Welcome to the class!

  7. Oh, biotechnology: I would guess that is a pretty amazing field right now, Christian! What a great way to bring the different themes of your education together into a single focus.
And I absolutely count table tennis as a sport; in fact, it is the only sport I am any good at myself, ha ha. I used to play all the time with my mom and dad when I was little, and luckily for me it turns out my husband is a table tennis fan too, and we're pretty evenly matched. He knows how to put spin on the ball, but I'm better at landing the ball right on the very edge of the table. So, he usually does win, but not by much.
Your Maisie looks like such a sweetie. I've always thought that if I were to get a dog, I'd like an Australian cattledog or an Australian shepherd. All the ones I've met have been so smart and also so good-natured too. So, yes, please share Maisie updates here...and maybe she can even star in a story for this class. There's always room for more animal stories!

  8. Hi Christian!
I too have an adorable Australian Shepherd and know how energetic they are. I also played competitive sports growing up. All my weekends as a child were devoted to softball. I think it's super cool that you've been to Australia too. It's definitely on my list of places I'd like to go one day. Hope you have an awesome semester!

  9. Howdy Christian,
First off, Australian Shepherds are easily the best breed of dog; that’s all I had growing up and they’re truly fantastic pups. My dog 'Olive' finally started to lose that hectic energy when she turned ten; so, they really do keep the energy high for a long time. I love tennis, always glad to see people getting into that sport, especially in the South – I’m from Texas and it didn’t seem to be much of a priority there. All the best, hope the semester is treating you well.

  10. Hi Christian! It's great that you have been able to travel to many places - I would love to visit Australia at some point to check another continent off the list of places I've been. Your dog is really cute as well, and I think it's cool that she is a Australian Shepherd. I look forward to getting to know you and reading your stories this semester.

  11. I am also a Biology major. I was pre-med but I just switched to PA. That is cool going into biotechnology. There is a really good John Oliver over the patients it is really crazy you should check it out. It is amazing that you have traveled so much being so young. I studied abroad last summer and that was my first real taste of traveling and It was such an amazing opportunity! Your puppy is adorable by the way!!

  12. Hey Christian,
Biology sounds like a hard major but I am glad you enjoy it! I must join you and say that I love sports, when I was young I tried to every sport imaginable. Traveling sounds like fun and I am glad it is one of your favorite things to do. Going to new places and experiencing new food and culture is intriguing. I hope this class goes well for you!

  13. Christian, I'm so jealous of your travels. I also have been able to go to lots of places, but I am dying to go to Ireland and Scotland. But out of all the places I have been, my favorite was Australia also! I also went to Sydney, but we went to a small island called Kangaroo Island and it was so beautiful! I definitely recommend it! Side note: your puppy is so cute!!

  14. Hey Christian! I am a mechanical engineering major but I would never have been able to do biology. I was never any good at biology in high school and it was always one of the subjects I struggled with the most. I also grew up always playing sports and traveling for tournaments. I have never been able to leave the country and am super jealous of all the travel that you have gone on!

  15. So I'm not going to lie, the best part about these introductions are the dog pictures! Such a sweet looking little pup!
Also, I am very jealous of all of your travels. That's one of my goals after graduation: take a trip outside of the US. The current health crisis is making that a bit difficult, but it can't last forever! Good luck finishing the rest of the semester!

  16. Hello Christian!

That’s a huge change from Civil Engineering to Biology! I completely get you about being unsure what you can do with your major because I’m a biochemistry major. There really isn’t much I can do with a biochemistry major other than research. I also feel you about sports. I swam in high school and I enjoy staying active and fit. However, I couldn’t imagine myself doing sports in college just because of how serious it gets. Lastly, I would like to say that your dog is a cutie! Have a great rest of the semester and I hope you figure out what you want to do!

  17. Christian,

It's nice to meet you! Changing your focus from concrete to living organisms sounds so drastic. That stark difference actually made me laugh. I'm glad you realized early enough that you didn't enjoy those classes. I definitely felt the same way about sports when I entered college- I thought it would be cool to run track in college, but I knew that's not what I wanted to do. Maisie is gorgeous. I've never seen a dog with such gorgeous blue eyes. Wow.
Good luck with the rest of the semester!

  18. Hey Christian,

I really enjoyed reading about you. It seems you have a decent idea of what you want to do after graduation. I used to play a lot of tennis when I was little too but I stopped when I got to high school. I agree that table tennis is a sport though. I remember seeing a table tennis match pop up on my Twitter timeline and it was so intense. Traveling is super cool too! I'm personally not a fan but I understand those that enjoy it. Also your dog is beautiful! Good luck with the rest of the semester and have a nice day!

  19. Hi Christian! Nice to meet you!! Memphis sounds like such a fun place to grow up, I’ve only ever lived in Oklahoma, so I bet it’s so different. What made you choose OU? I’ve never been on a cruise, I’m honestly just too afraid to get seasick or something. Also, I really really want to go to Australia, I feel like it’s a hidden gem. That was actually going to be my senior trip this summer, but it was canceled because of COVID-19.

  20. Hello Christian! I was initially a biology major (although I’ve since changed) so I can relate with you a bit on that front. I think it’s sometimes difficult to think about the medical field beyond the more well-known professions but there really is quite a bit of options out there if you look around! I always thought traveling was super important as you can sometimes get caught up in a small area but traveling really opens your vantage in understanding that things are much bigger than we can first fathom. Thanks for sharing!

  21. Hi Christian,
Just like everyone else I have to start by saying that your dog is adorable. I am from Oklahoma so I am always curious as to why people from outside of the state decide to choose OU. I completely agree with your love for travel. I love going out and seeing new things and experiencing different things that I would not normally have at home.

  22. Hey there! I'm jealous of how much you've been able to travel the world. I wish you included some pictures from where you've been - especially Alaska! Were you able to see any of the Aurora Borealis up there? (Excuse me if that was a stupid question. I really don't know where in the world we're able to view those... lol). And speaking to your topic on biotechnology and your major, have you ever thought about biomedical engineering? I also know people that major in chemical engineering and do some sort of minor or double major in biotechnology? I'm really not too familiar with the name or program but maybe you've heard of it! It seems right down your alley. :)
